Hypnotherapy school taught me this...

As a master hypnotist/hypnotherapist I was taught to use Image Therapy. As a hypnotist we don't tell the person what to visualize or imagine. (Note: some people cannot visualize, but all people can imagine.) However, the technique that works best is to lead the subject to experience all 5 senses when they imagine or visualize.
To clarify, when you visualize or imagine some scenario you should do it in the greatest detail that you can. As you go along, ask yourself, things like how does the room and atmosphere smell? If there is food or drink involved, how does it taste. For example, imagine a wine bottle, what is the name of the wine and does it taste as good or better than any you have tasted. Work your way through all senses, sight, hearing, touch, gustatory (taste) and smell.
Once you have done this you have created a reality that you can visit again and again. The mind cannot tell the difference between events imagined and events experienced in 3D. So, for example, you imagine breaking a record over and over. You have no fear, no doubt about doing this in you mind. When that day comes, it will go just as you visualized or imagined. The upshot of this is: Your mind has already done this thing many times before. It's old hat! Time to move on to your next quest.
